Its a physically demanding sport, Fuentes said, adding that although cheerleading is not officially recognized as a competition sport by the Utah High School Activities Association, he hopes to take the team to at least one competitive event in the Salt Lake City area next spring, just for the experience. The GCHS cheerleading team is scheduled to make its first public appearance on the sidelines and during the halftime of the Red Devils first home football game of the season, which is against Rifle, Colorado, on Friday, Aug. 29.
